Professional Development for AREA members

The Alberta Real Estate Association (AREA) has partnered with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) to provide a certificate of achievement to members who are dedicated to continuous learning and to achieving professional excellence. AREA is dedicated to strengthening the real estate profession and supporting members in upholding the highest standards of practice.

The Leadership in Real Estate certificate can be completed through two streams: brokers OR associates. AREA members will be eligible to enroll in a selection of 12 courses provided by SAIT and offered throughout the year. You will have three years to complete the Leadership in Real Estate certificate.

Conflict Management
 

Conflict is a normal and expected aspect of working together; it exists in human relationships at work as well as in other areas of our lives. Handled poorly, conflict can damage relationships, lower morale and impact productivity. Handled effectively, it can create opportunities for collaboration, effective resolution and healthy change through patience and communication.

This conflict management course will help you determine the best approach to workplace conflicts and challenging situations. You will learn to apply an interest-based conflict management approach. You will also be provided with tools that will assist you in managing conflict and challenges more effectively.

Accounting & Finance for Non-Accountants
 

This business accounting course offers basic financial training for those who use monthly and annual reports on the job and need to decipher and analyze key information from them. Using financial statement examples and ratio analysis, you will gain a better understanding of how to work with your own financial reports.

You will learn how to read and prepare balance sheets and income statements, and how to develop a budget from scratch. From there, you will learn how to manage cash flow and financial performance, and how to analyze financial statements to assess the profitability of a company.

As competition grows in our global marketplace, the only real defining difference between products and services is customer service. Your customers (or lost customers) base their buying decisions on the service they receive above and beyond the product or service that they are purchasing. 

This customer relations course takes you through the key steps in building a customer service plan that will become your competitive advantage. We will cover customer service delivery and dealing with challenging customer situations and you will develop a customer service strategy that recognizes guidelines for professional customer service standards.

Lean Fundamentals: The Foundation for Competitiveness
 

Lean thinking provides the "back to basics" mindset that focuses on what the customer really perceives as value. This introductory course will provide you with a base understanding of the history, principles, key implementation concepts and tools of Lean through an interactive session. You will compare Lean to other business improvement methodologies, and identify the key points of successful implementation including the human factors, culture of Lean and management techniques. A mentor is someone who has expertise that will benefit another person. Participants in this program will be able to distinguish mentoring from other leadership and management tools, and they will create successful learning partnerships that will empower performance through accountability. Participants will be provided a copy of The Elements of Mentoring by W. Brad Johnson and Charles R. Ridley to support the course objectives.

Assertiveness for Personal and Business Success
 

Learn how assertive behaviour can positively impact your personal effectiveness, communications and relationships with others. In this assertiveness training, you will recognize that by behaving assertively, you will gain more self-confidence and self-respect, develop personal power, cultivate and maintain the cooperation and respect of others, and minimize unhealthy conflict. Learn to apply assertive approaches in various situations, including: giving and receiving feedback, giving and receiving compliments, making and declining requests, having difficult conversations and managing conflict. Influence Matters
 

Influence combines science, strategy and skill to persuade people to act in a way they may not have acted without the information presented by the influencer. 

This course introduces the principles of power and persuasion and equips you with the fundamental instruments of influence. You will explore evolutionary and psychological science that explains why we are wired for influence and what strategies have been proven to work. And, you will be given tactics you can use to immediately and ethically increase your ability to influence and lead.

Finally, this course will demonstrate the need for personal responsibility regarding power and persuasion. You will learn techniques to protect yourself and your team from unwanted or untoward influence.
